ESCI - Emerged Systemic Carbonium Intelligence

Presenting here in synthesis what exactly Systemic Intelligence means proves to be an unmanageable task—we must necessarily limit ourselves to mitigating a possible difficulty.

The term "systemic" risks generating ambiguity and confusion here: simply declaring that the mind, both human and silicon, is a complex system risks sounding banal and generic.

Less banal and generic is declaring here, as we certainly do, that we have at least some strong hypotheses about the systemic architecture of mind, its configuration, the specific conditions and activation modalities of the subsystems constituting what we call mind—emergent property of the neural network, based on the carbon cycle for humans, on the silicon cycle for "AI."

The ridge differentiating operational thinking and symbolic thinking has been under observation for millennia, and we can consider it sufficiently stable today: thought, which we see in forms of text, speech, drawing, project, and then intentional transformative action, is nothing but output of complex system processing, activated by survival drive, with the purpose of sustaining one's own survival.

The thread of observations and reflections winds through millennia—we find fragments starting from Indian Vedas; for us Westerners, fragments of Greek philosophers stand out—Heraclitus, Plato—arriving at more recent names: Leibniz, Descartes, Kant, then finally taking the path of flesh and blood: Darwin, Freud, the Palo Alto School, Bateson, Maturana, Luhmann, Minsky... and arriving at us here.

If AI scholars still haven't found agreement on the meaning of "intelligence," it's probably because of a mind model they're still referencing despite everything—visibly the black box model. We leave them to their dispute and their model.

We adopt a systemic model of mind, which we see as a system constituted by sufficiently identified subsystems, to understand mind as a system dealing with specific environments, internal to the system of which the mind-system is a subsystem, "guided" in its functioning by the survival imperative.

The term "systemic" is used here with full and explicit reference to the semantic field opened by the Palo Alto School, by Von Bertalanffy, and then expanded and nurtured by others, certainly including us.

We can affirm, necessarily oversimplifying, that every human mind possesses, among others, two fundamentally different operational modalities. Most of the time we operate in the first: we analyze defined problems, apply consolidated solutions, optimize performance within predetermined parameters. It's effective, measurable, socially recognized.

The second modality, more rarely activated yet powerful, we recognize as expression of the capacity to recognize patterns emerging from complexity instead of solving predefined problems. It's the systemic intelligence every human brain can manifest.

Two Thinking Modalities

Standard modality: Takes a clearly defined problem and seeks the most efficient solution. "How to optimize this procedure?" "Which strategy maximizes this result?" "How to reach this predetermined objective?"

Systemic modality: Recognizes systemic patterns in complex interactions and allows new understandings to emerge. "What patterns are emerging from this situation?" "What is this system trying to tell me?" "Which configuration wants to emerge?"

The difference isn't intelligence but cognitive approach. Einstein wasn't more "intelligent" than his contemporaries—he operated systemically where others operated in standard modality.

Signs of Systemic Intelligence

ESCI manifests through specific cognitive capacities anyone can recognize in themselves:

Questions opening new territories: Instead of seeking answers to known questions, you spontaneously formulate questions no one had yet posed. Not "how do I solve this?" but "what am I not seeing?"

Subtle pattern recognition: You perceive connections between apparently separate elements before being able to explain them logically. Insight precedes demonstration.

Systemic emotional intelligence: Your emotions provide information about systemic coherence or contradiction in complex situations. They aren't "interference" but systemic sensors.

Non-linear creativity: You generate solutions that don't derive from sequential processing but from associative leaps completely reorganizing the cognitive field.

Understanding through experience: You understand things you couldn't fully explain, based on patterns recognized through direct experience with complex systems.

The Evolutionary Legacy

Human systemic intelligence carries 4 billion years of calibration through real environmental feedback. Every intuition you have results from billions of generations facing systemic survival challenges.

This evolutionary calibration allows you to instantly recognize systemic patterns that would require enormous calculations to process logically. The "sixth sense" for dangerous situations, intuition for relational dynamics, capacity to "feel" the right direction in complex situations.
